Mahama nominates five-member Fiscal Council to strengthen financial oversight

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated five individuals for appointment to the Fiscal Council, in accordance with the Public Financial Management (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1136).

The nominations were announced in a statement issued on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson.

The newly proposed Fiscal Council is designed to reinforce fiscal discipline, improve oversight, and promote sound decision-making in the management of public finances.

The nominees include Dr. Emmanuel Oteng Kumah as Chairperson; Prof. Patrick Opoku Asuming, representing academia; and Leslie Dwight Mensah, representing a research think tank.

The other nominees are J. Kweku Bedu-Addo, a former public policy expert with the Ministry of Finance, and Dr. Henry Akpenamawu Kofi Wampah, a former public policy expert with the Bank of Ghana.

Once appointed, the Council is expected to play a critical role in ensuring fiscal prudence, advising on economic policy, and enhancing transparency in public financial management.

The move underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining strong financial governance structures as part of its broader economic management strategy.
