Majority in Parliament Accuses Ex-Security Chiefs of Orchestrating Post-Election Violence

The Majority group in Parliament has leveled accusations against two former high-ranking security officials—ex-Minister for National Security, Kofi Totobi Quakyi, and former National Security Coordinator, Larry Gbevlo-Lartey—claiming they are responsible for orchestrating post-election violence allegedly committed by thugs tied to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). During a media briefing,

Deputy Majority Leader Patricia Appiagyei voiced alarm over the reported unrest, warning that it poses a grave risk to the safety and security of all Ghanaians.

According to the Majority, a series of violent incidents have been recorded since the conclusion of the 2024 General Elections, including assaults on government officials and vandalism targeting state institutions. These acts are purportedly being carried out by certain members of the NDC.

The accusation comes just a day after President-elect John Mahama named both Quakyi and Gbevlo-Lartey to a provisional team responsible for national security until permanent appointments are made.

“We have received credible intelligence suggesting that these violent acts are being orchestrated by senior NDC leaders,” Appiagyei stated. “Mr. Totobi Quakyi and Col. (Rtd) Larry Gbevlo-Lartey appear to be the driving forces behind these NDC thugs, inciting them to commit violence against innocent citizens. Even more concerning is the suggestion that these activities might escalate immediately after the swearing-in of President-Elect John Dramani Mahama.”

Appiagyei further emphasized the potential risks to national security, calling on Ghanaians to remain alert and promptly report any suspicion of criminal or violent conduct to the appropriate authorities. Meanwhile, Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh challenged President-Elect Mahama to demonstrate leadership by quelling the violent disturbances to prevent any unforeseen consequences.

“They claim no knowledge of these incidents, but the individuals were chanting ‘3y3 Zu, 3y3 Za,’ and receiving responses from them,” he noted. “Today, they suggest these troublemakers are coming from nowhere and insist they do not know them. Yet even before taking office, we are well aware of the plans and actions underway.

“We are watching and anticipating that the President-Elect will provide leadership. If not, we will take appropriate measures as prescribed by law to ensure our interests are not undermined,” he concluded.
