Majority Leader assures Parliament: Ministers will not be shielded from accountability

The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has emphasised that his Office will not shield any minister of state from appearing before Parliament to respond to questions posed by the Members.

Speaking in the Chamber on Friday, Mr Ayariga clarified that ministers are expected to come to the House after receiving a three-week notice, except in circumstances beyond their control.

His assurance followed concerns raised by Members of Parliament (MPs) about the absence of some ministers during scheduled question sessions.

According to Mr Ayariga, certain ministers had complained that they did not receive timely notifications to attend plenary sittings to answer questions.

In response, Mr Ayariga pledged that his office was ready to assist in reaching out to ministers to ensure they fulfill their obligations to Parliament.

He further explained that on average, about 16 questions were asked per day during sittings, and ministers have consistently availed themselves to provide answers.

The Majority Leader stressed that there was no mechanism in place to shield any minister from accountability, reiterating Parliament’s commitment to transparency and oversight.

Mr Ayariga’s remarks underscored the importance of ministerial responsibility and the role of Parliament in ensuring that government officials remained answerable to the people’s representatives.
