The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Northern Regional Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man for allegedly defiling and impregnating a 14-year-old primary school pupil at Nyanshegu, a suburb of Tamale.

The suspect, identified only as Mohammed, is also accused of taking the minor to a private health facility where the pregnancy was terminated without the knowledge or consent of her parents.

Mohammed has since been arraigned before the Tamale Magistrate Court 1, presided over by His Worship Stephen Tabiri, and has been remanded into police custody. He faces charges of defilement and causing an abortion and is scheduled to reappear before the court on March 4, 2026.

Speaking to the media, the victim’s father, Mohammed Salifu, confirmed the family’s resolve to pursue justice.

He revealed that attempts had been made by local leaders to persuade the family to settle the matter out of court, but they refused.

“Two chiefs and some opinion leaders in our community came to our house to plead with us to withdraw the case,” Salifu said. “But we refused and insisted that we want justice for my daughter.”

According to sources, the victim’s family and others connected to the case have reportedly received threats from individuals believed to be associated with the accused.
