Married, pregnant and struggling

By Anon

I have been married for just seven months, but I am already exhausted and considering giving up.

My husband insists that we cook and eat from home every day, yet he gives me only GHS 60 daily to buy food and cook with. I do not work and have no extra income. Whenever I complain, he compares me to other women and says they receive even less from their husbands and still cook well.

There are days he gives me GHS 60 and expects me to prepare meals like fufu and groundnut soup. When we do not cook and I need to buy food outside, he does not want me to spend more than GHS 15, so I sometimes end up buying rice or kenkey without protein.

I am also pregnant. My husband earns good money, owns a car, and lives comfortably, yet he keeps saying he is “investing” and cannot spend what he earns. He has been stingy since we met, but he always claimed it was for our future. Now that we are married, it has only gotten worse.

He will not allow me to work, yet he also refuses to provide adequately. He does not let me buy clothes or take care of myself. When he gives me GHS 100, he behaves as if he has done something extraordinary. When my mother was admitted to the hospital, he gave me only GHS 50 to send to her.

I honestly believed things would improve after marriage, but they have not. If I were not pregnant, I would have already walked away. I feel trapped and confused and need advice on what to do next.
