Some rice importers in Ghana have allegedly cancelled and withdrawn all advertisements with Accra-based Citi FM.
The importers further cancelled all contracts with OmniMedia, the parent company of the station.
This action comes after the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company, Samuel Attah-Mensah, better known as called ‘Sammens’ started a campaign to encourage Ghanaians to consume locally produced rice.
His campaign which started on Monday is dubbed, ‘Operation Feed Yourself’, has spread across the country.
Sammens commented on his social media handles on the plight of farmers in the Northern Region, who have been unable to sell the rice they had produced.
This is largely due to the saturation of the Ghanaian market by imported rice.
This act was seen by importers of foreign rice, as an attempt by Sammens to collapse their business, though he says he only intended to create awareness.
Sammens, however, said in an interview that, “the decision by the companies to withdraw their business with the station was a “big deal” to the station.
He says it is, however, a bigger win for Ghana.
His tweet announcing the cancellation of ads by the rice importers;
…. And all the companies that advertise imported Rice on Citi FM withdrew their ads and cancelled the contracts. Big deal? Ghana wins! ?
