A missing corpse from the Oda Hospital morgue has finally been found in a hospital at Suhum.
According to the family in the Eastern Region who were preparing to bury their 62-year-old relative, they received a stranger’s body from the Oda Government Hospital morgue, only to later discover that their loved one’s remains had been mistakenly transferred to a hospital in Suhum.
The body of Margaret Yaa Kyeraa, deposited at the Oda morgue last month for a burial scheduled on May 16, 2026, went missing just as undertakers brought what was supposed to be her corpse to the family home in Akyem Apaaso.
“Yaa Kyeraa had a very short haircut. But the body they brought had braided hair,” said a family member who spoke to The Mirror on condition of anonymity.
The family immediately returned the wrong body to the morgue.
But hospital staff could not locate Kyeraa’s remains, throwing funeral plans into disarray.
The confusion also brought emotional distress to relatives who had travelled long distances, including the widower who flew in from Gabon, the deceased’s father who came from Asante Juaben, and many others from Kumasi.
On May 20, 2026, relatives confirmed that Kyeraa’s body had been found at the Suhum Government Hospital morgue.
Investigations suggested that her remains were accidentally transferred there alongside other corpses moved from Oda to Suhum.
Dr. Kwabena Awuku, Medical Superintendent of the Oda Government Hospital, initially called the incident “unfortunate” and said he would investigate.
He had even proposed bringing in experts from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for DNA testing on Kyeraa’s children and the rejected body.
However, when contacted by The Mirror after the body surfaced at Suhum, Dr. Awuku declined to confirm or deny the development, directing the reporter instead to “go and contact the family members of Kyeraa.”
The bereaved family has now rescheduled the burial and final funeral rites for June 13, 2026.
