MTN, CalBank commended as blood drive surpasses 7,000-unit target

The National Blood Service has lauded a landmark partnership between the MTN Ghana Foundation and CalBank after their 2026 “Save a Life” campaign collected 7,020 units of blood, exceeding its 7,000-unit target.

The nationwide exercise, held on February 13, activated 47 donation centers across all 16 regions to bolster reserves for the National Blood Service and regional hospitals.

Shirley Phyllis Owusu-Ofori, CEO of the National Blood Service, hailed MTN’s support as a “game changer,” emphasizing that regular voluntary donors are the cornerstone of a safe blood supply.

MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett highlighted that reliable blood is crucial for emergencies and routine procedures.

He noted that while the initial goal was ambitious, he had challenged the public to aim for 10,000 units in future drives.

CalBank CEO Carl Asem described the initiative as a private-sector duty to safeguard life, going beyond corporate social responsibility to strengthen public health infrastructure.

Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services Officer at MTN Ghana, celebrated the power of the new partnership, stating that collaboration is the foundation of a thriving nation and that collective action can save lives.
