MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita has concluded a three-day working visit to Ghana, announcing a significant acceleration of investment aimed at bolstering the company’s infrastructure and digital services in the country.

In a media briefing on Friday, Mupita revealed plans to invest US$1.1 billion in the Ghanaian market over the next three years. This marks a sharp increase in capital expenditure compared to the previous cycle, where the telecom giant invested US$1 billion over five years.

“We are going to accelerate capital investment within the business,” Mupita stated.

“This acceleration demonstrates that Ghana remains a material operation for the Group.”

The funds are earmarked for building robust infrastructure and improving overall service delivery.

The visit also served as a platform for high-level discussions with public sector stakeholders, including the Bank of Ghana, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), and the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations.

According to a statement from the company, the dialogues focused on strengthening collaboration to support national development goals while positioning MTN as a key driver of digital progress in the region.

Reinforcing its commitment to the local market, the Group announced that MTN Ghana has been formally elevated to the status of a “major subsidiary.”

This new classification reflects the operating company’s growing strategic importance within the wider MTN Group portfolio.

During the visit, Mupita also engaged with MTN Ghana’s leadership and staff, outlining expectations for the year ahead and emphasising ongoing priorities such as network resilience, customer experience, and youth empowerment.

Echoing this sentiment, Ebenezer Asante, Senior Vice President of MTN Group, emphasised a forward-looking partnership with the government.

“We are not only here to talk about what we have done in the past, but to engage in solutioning, to explore what more we can do together,” Asante said.

In a significant local development, MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett outlined ambitious plans to expand the company’s physical footprint drastically.

Blewett disclosed that the company aims to roll out at least 500 new network sites by the end of 2026. To put the scale of the expansion into perspective, he noted that MTN Ghana built 50 sites in 2025 and only 25 to 30 sites in 2024.

“Now, we are moving to 500 sites in a single year,” Blewett said.

“And why are we doing that? Because it gives a better quality of service to our customers.”
