The National Identification Authority (NIA) has called off its mass registration of Ghana Card in the Eastern Region indefinitely.
Head of Corporate Affairs of the Authority, Francis Palmdeti, revealed in a statement that the decision was as a result of situation in the region coupled with the outbreak of coronavirus.
“The decision to suspend the registration follows a careful assessment of the exercise in the region so far.
“It also takes into account the current trend in the spread of COVID-19 in Ghana since the suspension of the mass registration exercise on Saturday, 21st March 2020, following the service on the NIA of an interlocutory injunction application.”
On March 26, a High Court presided over by Anthony Oppong threw out a case for an injunction on the registration by the NIA in the Eastern Region.
Earlier, the authority had been forced to halt operation in the Eastern Region following interlocutory injunction application filed at the High Court by two individuals.
They sought to effectively restrain the authority from continuing with the mass Ghana Card registration.
The applicants, Kevor Mark-Oliver and Emmanuel Akumatey Okrah, prayed the court to “restrain the Respondents from continuing with the mass registration and issuance of the Ghana card in the Eastern Region pending the final determination of the Human Rights Application.”
After a court dismissed the case, the National Identification Authority has also suspended the mass registration exercise in the Eastern Region.
