The National Sports Authority (NSA) has temporally closed the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, Ashanti Region capital with immediate effect.
Acting Regional Director of the NSA, Edmond Appiah, in a statement, said the stadium is closed to both football and athletics purposes with effect from Monday, February 17, 2020.
The stadium which is home to one of Africa’s most popular sports club, Asante Kotoko and King Faisal is the largest in Ghana with a seating capacity of 40,528
The two teams would have to make alternative arrangements to host visiting teams in the ongoing 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League games.
According to the NSA, the closure is to allow it and the Ministry of Youth and Sports have ample and uninterrupted time to fix critical parts of the stadium ahead of the celebration of Ghana’s 63rd Independence Anniversary Celebration.
The statement also added that the total renovation of the facility would resume immediately after the celebrations.
It, therefore advised the public to make alternative arrangements for their programmes.
