National Theatre celebrates World Poetry Day with Ayawaso North basic schools

The National Theatre has commemorated World Poetry Day with educational poetry recitals and performances by basic schools in the Ayawaso North Municipality of Accra.

The commemoration, held on March 25, World Poetry Day, saw pupils from various basic schools across the municipality displaying their poetic talents.

It was preceded by a workshop for the children where selected pupils received training from seasoned poets on the art of crafting poetry.

The workshop equipped them with essential skills and literary devices to construct powerful poems, setting the tone for a day of vibrant performances, literary exploration, and a platform for the next generation of poets to shine.

Mr Henry Herbert-Malm, the Acting Executive Director of the National Theatre, encouraged the young participants to cultivate love for poetry, emphasising its power to inspire and transform lives.

“Make poetry a habit,” he urged.

The event was a testament to Ghana’s rich poetic heritage, with the pupils delivering passionate recitations of both classic and contemporary poems.

Teachers, pupils, and the National Theatre staff looked on with pride as the young poets brought words to life, captivating the audience with their confidence and flair.

The theme for this year: “Poetry for Peace and Unity,” highlighted the role of poetry in promoting peace, creativity, and inclusion.

The celebration is part of a broader effort to promote linguistic diversity, creative expression, and social cohesion through the arts.

The National Theatre organised the programme in collaboration with the Ayawaso North Municipal Education Directorate and the Maamobi District Church of Pentecost, which served as host.
