The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) spent a whooping GH¢ 1 million on the December 17 Referendum that was aborted.

President Akufo-Addo announced government’s decision to withdraw the December 17 Referendum after consultations.

According to Chairperson of NCCE, Josephine Nkrumah, the Commission spent GH¢ 1 million on creating awareness on the referendum together with the District Assembly polls.

‘We were given a million cedis and as we speak I think we’ve dissipated all of those resources. And that is not cheap money’, she said on Joy News.

The Chairperson explained that there were false claims about the referendum, hence the need for a lot of resources to be channeled into educating Ghanaians.

‘Because there were a lot of misinformation around the referendum, there were a lot of targeted education on that score’, she added.

Josephine Nkrumah also said Ghana blew a golden opportunity to strengthen its electoral processes by the cancellation of the referendum.

“If you look at all the work that has been put into the referendum for it to be called off, you ask why? It was a real opportunity for Ghanaians in terms of reforms and in terms of where we collectively wanted local governance to go. We’ve all missed a golden opportunity,” she said.

Chairperson of NCCE, Josephine Nkrumah, said her outfit will continue to give Ghanaians the needed education on all electoral processes.
