The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has convened an emergency meeting to review the court judgement that sentenced its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), to 20 years in prison for illegal mining.
In a press release issued on Monday, July 20, 2026, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, Esq., confirmed that the party’s Flagbearer and legal team are currently deliberating on the judgement delivered by the Accra High Court earlier in the day.
“The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), together with our Flagbearer and the Party’s legal team, is currently in a meeting to thoroughly review the judgement… and to determine the appropriate next course of action,” the statement read.
The party indicated that its official position and any decisions arising from the deliberations will be communicated in due course.
In the meantime, Mr. Frimpong appealed for calm and unity among party members, urging them to remain disciplined and steadfast during what he described as a “challenging moment.”
“We respectfully urge all members of our great Party to rally behind the leadership during this challenging moment. Let us remain calm, united, disciplined, and steadfast in our commitment to the values and interests of the New Patriotic Party,” the statement added.
The development comes as the party faces one of its most high-profile legal setbacks, with its Ashanti Regional Chairman now facing a custodial sentence and a GHC120,000 fine over mining activities on the Samreboi concession in the Western Region.
The NPP has yet to indicate whether it will pursue an appeal or other legal interventions on behalf of its embattled regional chairman.
