Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been released from a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centre following a judicial order, his legal team confirmed on Tuesday.
In a statement issued on April 7, 2026, lawyers from Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners said Mr. Ofori-Atta has since returned home and is reunited with his family.
“On April 7, 2026, Ken Ofori-Atta was released from ICE detention pursuant to a judicial order. He is now home with his family,” the statement read.

The legal team emphasised that the former finance minister remains committed to due process as he continues to defend his rights under U.S. law. His family also expressed gratitude to well-wishers for their prayers and encouragement during his detention.
Mr. Ofori-Atta, who served as Finance Minister from 2017 to early 2024 under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been under investigation by Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over policy decisions taken during his tenure.
The OSP, led by Kissi Agyebeng, initiated proceedings for an INTERPOL Red Notice in June 2025 after Mr. Ofori-Atta failed to honour multiple invitations for questioning.
That Red Notice has since been withdrawn, meaning his details no longer appear in INTERPOL’s database and member states are no longer obligated to act on the alert.
