A heartbreaking tragedy occurred in Ali, a suburb of Suhum, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, when Ghana National Fire Service personnel retrieved the lifeless body of a one-week-old baby boy from a toilet pit.
According to officials of the fire service, a distress call was received around 0630 hours near Gateway Preparatory School.
An 11-member rescue team, led by Mr. Danso Henry, Assistant Station Officer, arrived at the scene at 0644 hours and immediately commenced a carefully coordinated operation.
By 0700 hours, the team had successfully recovered the infant, but sadly, he was already unresponsive.
Preliminary investigations suggest the act may have been a case of infanticide, allegedly committed by the baby’s mother, who is reported to have fled the scene before the rescue team arrived.
The baby’s body has since been handed over to the Suhum Police Command in the eastern region for preservation and further investigation.
The GNFS, in a statement, commended its team for the swift and professional response in handling what it described as an emotionally difficult assignment.
The Service also urged the public to support law enforcement with information that could help trace the suspect and bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, the discovery has left residents of Suhum in shock, with many condemning the act and calling for stronger community sensitisation on responsible parenting and support systems for struggling mothers.
