Our evacuation operation in Israel has been a success – Okudzeto Ablakwa

Ghana has successfully concluded the evacuation of all its citizens who sought government assistance to leave Israel amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced on Thursday.

In a Facebook post, Mr Ablakwa confirmed that the evacuees have arrived safely in Ghana.

“Our evacuation operation in Israel has been a success. We have safely evacuated all Ghanaians who expressed the desire to be assisted by the Government of Ghana out of Israel back home,” he said.

The operation facilitated the return of Ghanaian civilians and also included the relocation of some diplomatic staff from the country’s embassy in Tel Aviv.

However, the Minister clarified that the mission was not a full diplomatic withdrawal. A skeleton crew remains at the embassy to ensure the continuation of essential consular services for Ghanaians who have chosen to stay in Israel.

“Government has decided to leave behind a few critical staff for necessary consular support,” Mr. Ablakwa noted.

The minister extended the government’s gratitude to the authorities in Israel and Egypt, whose cooperation was instrumental in the operation.

This acknowledgement points to a logistical route through Egypt, a key corridor for civilians exiting the region amidst the ongoing hostilities involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.

The repatriation effort underscores the administration of President John Mahama’s commitment to the safety of its citizens abroad.

Earlier this week, during his “Resetting Ghana Tour” in the Bono Region, the President voiced confidence in the nation’s ability to navigate the external pressures arising from the geopolitical tensions.

Mr. Ablakwa reaffirmed this stance, stating, “The Mahama Administration will continue with safe evacuation efforts as we prioritise the welfare of all Ghanaians.”

He left the door open for future operations, pledging continued support should the volatile situation in the region worsen.
