Highlife musician, Ben Brako has revealed the major cause of ‘payola’ in Ghana’s music industry.

In Ghana, ‘payola’ is a popular term for monies taken from artists to promote their songs by individual DJs and presenters.

According to Ben Brako, the concept became predominant because disk jockeys were and are still not being paid well enough.

The singer told DJ Splash on Rainbow Radio he felt disappointed when he returned to Ghana to discover that an artist had to pay to get their songs on air.

He added that he was sad when he came to Ghana with so much ideas but he realized the system had changed.

The veteran singer noted that more private radio stations exist now as compared to the era when the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) was the sole media space in Ghana.

Ben Brako made these revelations when he was asked why he has not released another top album apart from his ‘Baya’ album in 1987.
