Veteran Ghanaian actor and former radio presenter, Kofi Adjorlolo believes DJs and presenters taking ‘payola’ is not wrong under certain conditions.
In Ghana, ‘payola’ is a popular term for monies taken from artists to promote their songs by individual DJs and presenters.
In an interview on Pure FM, the showbiz personality revealed the best time presenters can take payola.
According to him, it is not wrong for presenters to accept ‘payola’ after they have promoted a song from a musician for some time.
Kofi Adjorlolo is of the view that it is not right for them to take it before they do what is required.
“Payola becomes only bad when you insist on it being given to you before you perform the duties you are already being paid for but aside that, if someone appreciates your support and as a form of gesture gives you something, I don’t think it is bad,” he stated.
In that same interview, Kofi Adjorlolo said he received his first ‘payola’ as a radio presenter from Legendary musician, Daddy Lumba born Charles Kwadwo Fosu.
He stated that this happened when the artist released his first track ‘Yee Ye Aka Akwantoum’ in the early 90’s.
Kofi Adjorlolo confessed that, although he took the money which was quite substantial from Lumba, he never played the song.
The veteran actor added that he later on went to London and realized that the song was popular abroad and when he returned, he promoted it.
