Police arrest three, intercept 152 bales of suspected cannabis in Western Region

The Western Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects and impounded two Kia trucks allegedly carrying large quantities of cannabis during coordinated operations in the Shama Municipality and Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

The first breakthrough occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Assorku Barrier, where officers intercepted a Kia truck (registration GE 8965-12) travelling from Accra toward Takoradi.

A search of the vehicle revealed bags of suspected narcotics concealed beneath a layer of sawdust. While three occupants managed to flee the scene, police apprehended one suspect, identified as Moses Kweku Tawiah.

Intelligence gathered during that arrest led officers to Nkroful Junction, where a second Kia truck (registration GS 3368-17) was intercepted carrying a similar illicit cargo.

In total, authorities recovered 152 bales from the two vehicles, with each bale containing approximately 80 parcels of compressed leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

In a dramatic turn of events, two additional suspects, 55-year-old Kwabena Forson and 44-year-old Isaac Kwame Kontor, were later arrested for attempting to bribe the police.

The suspects allegedly offered GH¢69,000 to secure the release of Moses Kweku Tawiah.

Officers rejected the bribe on the spot and promptly took the two men into custody.
