Police arrest woman over false publication

The Western Central Regional Command of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) has arrested a woman, Elizabeth Acquah, also known as “Yaa Lizzy,” for allegedly publishing false news that caused public fear and panic.

A press release issued by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Beatrice Turkson, Head of Public Affairs of the Command, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said that on Monday, November 17, one Joseph Cann, 22, reported to the DOVVSU office of a misunderstanding with his girlfriend.

He said on November 2, while driving from Tarkwa to Bogoso with his girlfriend, Felicia Ofori Atta, 20, a misunderstanding ensued between them.

“To resolve the issue amicably, he stopped the vehicle at Yareyeya, a community along the route,” the release said.

While the two were settling the matter, the suspect (Yaa Lizzy) who was among mourners at a nearby funeral, allegedly confronted the complainant that he had kidnapped his girlfriend.

She is also said to have assaulted him and recorded videos of the couple and the vehicle.

ASP Turkson said the suspect later posted the videos on social media, falsely alleging that a child had been kidnapped.

The content went viral and created public fear and panic.

The Western Central Regional Police Command urged the public to desist from circulating false information.

It reminded citizens that spreading misleading content on social media was a criminal offence punishable by law.
