Police detain Immgration officer in AK47 ammunition probe

The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested an Assistant Immigration Control Officer over alleged involvement in transporting 2,600 AK47 ammunition seized recently in the Ashanti Region.

A police brief said the suspect, Assistant Immigration Control Officer (AICO) Ahmed Abdul Samad of the Ghana Immigration Service, was handed over to the Police on January 2, 2026, for investigations.

He was escorted at about 1220 hours by Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI) Awaitey Clement Adantey of the Bolgatanga Regional Immigration Office and his team.

The brief said the arrest followed investigations into the interception of 2,600 AK47 live ammunition in the Ashanti Region a few weeks earlier.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) John Dzineku Ferguson, the Upper East Regional Police Commander, indicated that intelligence gathered pointed to AICO Samad’s alleged involvement, prompting a request to the Ghana Immigration Service for his release to the Police.

During interrogation, the suspect said he previously served as a dispatch rider at the Tema Regional Immigration Headquarters before being transferred to the Paga Sector Command in June 2025.

He explained that he had left behind a body armour plate and an old pair of long black boots, and on December 26, 2025, asked an officer named Isaac at the headquarters in Accra to send the items to him.

According to the suspect, Isaac packaged the body armour plate, boots, a ballistic helmet, an electric diffuser and a disco bulb, and handed the parcel to OA Bus, registration number GT 5771-18, driven by Charles Brown.

The suspect said he later contacted one Siso at Walewale to receive the parcel but learnt that Siso had been arrested by the Police.

The brief said the suspect had been detained to assist with investigations.

Earlier, the Ashanti South Regional Police Command arrested two suspects for unlawful possession of 2,600 AK47 ammunition at the Kantanso-Asankare Police Barrier.

The suspects, identified as Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, a mate, were travelling on a Kia Grandbird bus, registration number GT 5771-18, from Accra to Walewale en route to Paga on December 26, 2025.

A Police release said a search of the vehicle uncovered two concealed containers holding 2,600 AK47 ammunition.

“A further search of the bus led to the recovery of a bag hidden under the driver’s seat containing two bulletproof plates, one black crash helmet and a pair of long boots,” it added.
