Police investigate fatal shooting, riot at mining site in Axim District

The Western Regional Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a violent confrontation at a mining site in Adelekezu near Dadwen, which resulted in the death of a teenager and the extensive destruction of company property.

The incident, which took place on Saturday, December 13, 2025, began as a dispute between local youth and private security personnel at the mining concession.

Preliminary police reports indicate that a group of youth attempted to enter the company’s site, leading to a physical struggle over a security guard’s pump-action gun.

Reports indicate that during the altercation, the guard discharged the weapon, fatally striking a 13-year-old (name withheld).

The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the Axim Government Hospital.

Following the shooting, enraged youth reportedly stormed the mining site, setting fire to two 4×4 SUVs and two tipper trucks, and damaging a pickup and a Toyota Land Cruiser.

They also threatened violence against workers, prompting police intervention. Officers rescued 11 workers from the site during the unrest.

Police have since arrested five suspects, Gyenyame Owusu (38), Matthew Asamah (24), Nana Yaw (15), Yaw Opoku (16), and Kojo Agyei (21) in connection with the violence and property destruction.

They face charges including causing harm and unlawful damage.

The Western Regional Police Command has urged residents to remain calm and to assist investigators as work continues to establish all facts surrounding the incident.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that justice is served.
