A police officer has been killed following an exchange of gunfire with armed robbers along the Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Bawku Division, Upper East Region.
The Upper East Regional Police Command has confirmed it has launched a full investigation into the incident, which occurred on Sunday, 8th February 2026.
Preliminary reports indicate that two officers, travelling toward Zebilla, came upon the robbery in progress. The armed assailants opened fire on them, striking one of the officers.
A response team, which had been dispatched following a distress call, rushed the injured officer to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.
He was, however, pronounced dead upon arrival. His body has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Police Command has assured the public that a special operation is now underway to track down, identify, and arrest all individuals involved in the attack, vowing they will “face the full rigours of the law.”
