President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to prioritise national unity over political, ethnic, and personal interests as the country celebrated its 69th Independence Anniversary on March 6, 2026.
Delivering the national address at the Jubilee House in Accra, he described the occasion as a reminder of the collective duty to build a prosperous nation under the theme: “Building Prosperity, Inspiring Hope.”
He reflected on the legacy of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, and the broader struggle for African liberation.
Mahama also commended the country’s democratic maturity, citing peaceful transitions and political tolerance as key achievements.
Touching on Ghana’s historical connection to the African diaspora, he announced that Ghana would soon submit a motion to the United Nations seeking to have slavery and the transatlantic slave trade declared the gravest crime against humanity.
The President called for patriotism expressed through daily actions, not just words, and stressed the importance of discipline, integrity, and unity in driving national development.
He acknowledged the challenges Ghana has faced over the years but emphasised the nation’s enduring resilience and commitment to progress.
