President warns criminals against targeting police

President John Dramani Mahama has warned suspected criminals against attacking police and other security personnel.

He said some criminal elements were deliberately targeting and killing officers, and cautioned that such acts would be met with a ruthless response.

The President gave the warning during the official handover of 100 Nissan Navara Pick-up vehicles to the Ghana Police Service to strengthen its operations.

He said the warning followed observations made during a memorial service for personnel who died in line of duty, noting that some were intentionally killed by suspected criminals.

“If you shoot any of the Police personnel, we will come after you,” he warned, and added that the police would deal ruthlessly with anyone who killed, harmed or injured officers.

The President said the government had fulfilled its promise to retool the Service to improve patrols, strengthen visibility, and enhance safety.

He described the gesture as a deliberate strategy to modernise Ghana’s security architecture.

President Mahama urged the Service to protect, professionally use and carefully maintain the vehicles, stressing that every resource must deliver real value to Ghanaians.

He also advised personnel to serve the public while respecting human rights.

Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Inspector General of Police (IGP), said the vehicles had arrived at a time when policing was evolving, becoming more mobile and intelligence-driven.

He said the vehicles would deepen police presence, which had been restrained for far too long.

Mr Yohuno said that the vehicles would reduce fear, insecurity and lawlessness in communities, as they would be distributed to all police regions.

It would consolidate gains made by the Service, promote economic growth and social stability, and support targeted patrols leading to the arrest of dangerous criminals.
