Former rapper and one member of the now-defunct music group, Akyeame- Quophi Okyeame has blurred the lines between what makes a gospel and secular song.
He says, it’s not a matter of mentioning the name of Jesus Christ or mentioning Bible verses in the song that qualifies it to be a Gospel song but the lyrical content preaching positivity.
In an interview titled, ‘What is Gospel music, who is a gospel musician?’, Quophi said, “The gospel is nothing but the truth. It doesn’t really matter who it is coming from. It is just that Christians have been able to own it. You can take Reggae; some of the Reggae songs talk about the positivity of life, preach the right things, that is gospel. It is not necessarily quoting Mark 1:31. “
He went on to say, “Sometimes, I hear gospel words in Daddy Lumba’s songs than Ohemaa Mercy. Christ did not listen to anybody’s music to authenticate it. Where did you see God listen to OJ music, to authenticate it as gospel music?”
Quophi Okyeame is now into video directing and other ministerial work (as a man of God).
