‘Ride With Team Europe’ 800km cycling relay successfully ends in Accra

Team Europe, Gladiators Cycling Group and some cycling enthusiasts on Saturday, April 18, 2026, completed an 800-kilometre relay across Ghana, capping a week‑long journey that combined diplomacy and sustainability advocacy.

The “Ride With Team Europe” relay began in Tamale in Northern Ghana and ended at the Netherlands Embassy in Accra after seven days that tested riders against hills, heavy rains and traffic.

The relay brought together ambassadors and diplomats from six EU member states namely Germany, Denmark, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Austria and France who passed the baton along the route while cycling through multiple regions.

The initiative was part of celebrations marking the European Union’s 50-year physical presence in Ghana while promoting sustainability.

Mr Rune Skinnebach, the EU Ambassador to Ghana, described the Accra‑based Gladiators Cycle Group as “the real heroes of this journey,” commending for making the relay a success.

He noted that relay incorporated a strong sustainability element, with participants planting 1,000 trees in collaboration with Ghana’s Forestry Commission under the Tree for Life initiative.

“The warmth of the Ghanaian people was confirmed once again, as people joined us along the way on their bicycles, or cheering us on even in the remotest parts of the country.  Along the way we visited local chiefs, regional ministers, and community representatives,” said Mr Skinnebach.

Madam Wendy Van Meel, Acting Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, said the journey offered a fresh perspective on the country.

“For me personally it was a wonderful experience and a different way to see Ghana — not from the car, but from the bike,” she said, praising the Gladiators Cycle Group for leading the expedition from north to south.

Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director‑General of the National Sports Authority, attending the programme on behalf of Sports Minister Kofi Adams, congratulated the team and said the ride highlighted the need for more rider‑friendly roads.

“This journey creates a roadmap to reduce and eliminate the menace on our roads,” Mr Ankrah said, linking the initiative to President John Dramani Mahama’s “Big Push” agenda, which aims to expand infrastructure and improve safety for all road users.

The finale also featured a sustainable fashion show by the All-Foundation Group, which showcased a collection titled “Up Cycling in Sports,” highlighting environmental responsibility through recycled sportswear.
