Robbers kills Briton in Tema

A British national has been shot and killed by armed robbers at a popular drinking spot in Tema, sparking a police manhunt and prompting diplomatic concern. The 68-year-old man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, was attacked on Friday evening at a bar opposite the Community 9 Cemetery, where he was seated with acquaintances.

According to the Tema Regional Police Command, six young men on two motorcycles arrived at the venue shortly after 7 p.m. Two of them approached the victim’s table and snatched his mobile phone. When he attempted to retrieve it, one of the assailants pulled out a gun and shot him at close range. The attackers fled the scene immediately on their motorcycles.

The victim was rushed to the Tema General Hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Police later recovered a 9mm spent shell at the scene, now undergoing ballistic analysis.

ASP Dede Dzakpasu, spokesperson for the Tema Regional Police Command, confirmed that investigations are underway, and the British High Commission has been formally notified. “We are working around the clock to identify and arrest the perpetrators. We are also calling on the public to assist with any relevant information,” she said.

Witnesses told police the attackers looked to be in their early to mid-20s, and all wore helmets and face coverings. One resident described the area as an easy target for night-time robberies, saying: “They know people sit here after work, with phones and drinks on the table. But for them to shoot and kill – that has shocked all of us.”

Police believe the motive was robbery, but the sudden escalation into lethal violence has heightened concern over public safety in the area. The command has increased patrols and urged bars and social spaces in Tema to improve security measures, particularly at night.

The killing of a foreign national in such circumstances is likely to invite significant attention. The British High Commission has not yet issued a formal statement, but sources close to the mission suggest it is closely monitoring developments and may move to support the victim’s family.

The police are asking anyone with information related to the motorcycles used or the suspects’ movements before or after the attack to come forward. In the meantime, the Tema community is grappling with renewed fears over violent crime.

“This was a man who was just enjoying an evening out,” a neighbour said. “Now he is gone, and we all feel less safe.”
