Lydia and Linda Awui, identical twins who were joined at the abdomen at the time of their birth have called on former President Rawlings to show appreciation for his support in ensuring the bill incurred for their separation was taken care of.
The two girls were separated at the Korle Bu teaching hospital three months after they were born in 1999. Explaining their condition, Dr Appeadu-Mensah, one of the pediatric surgeons who undertook their surgery, said the girls shared a single liver at birth and it took two sets of surgeons and anaesthetists six hours to successfully separate them.
Accompanied by their parents, one Madam Benedicta and Dr Appeadu-Mensah, the twins thanked the ex-president for his intervention at the time and presented him with a plaque. They also adorned him with some beads all in an effort to show their appreciation.
Ex-President Rawlings in return appreciated their kind gesture and thoughtfulness and congratulated the medical team that undertook the surgery many years ago for a fantastic job done.
Speaking to Dr Appeadu-Mensah, he said “I am so glad somebody is here representing such level of skill. It’s always a pleasure and honour to meet people like you who always perform miracles. It’s a real wonder they made it, listening to the statistics.”
Lydia and Linda have successfully completed their high school education at the Akwamuman Senior High, Akosombo and look forward to studying medicine at the university.
They have managed to live healthy happy lives ever since their operation in 1999.
