SIM re-registration exercise aims at curbing MoMo fraud – Sam George

The Minister for Communication and Digitalisation, Samuel Nartey George, has unveiled plans to integrate the upcoming SIM re-registration exercise with punitive measures that will cut fraudsters off from state services.

Speaking in Accra on Tuesday, the Minister positioned the re-registration as not just an administrative update, but as a major deterrent against mobile money (MoMo) crime.

He emphasized that the integration of SIM records with the Ghana Card means that convicted fraudsters face the ultimate digital sanction: losing access to government services.

“When his Ghana Card is blocked, he loses access to every government service,” Sam George warned, stating that this holistic approach makes the cost of fraud “prohibitive.”

The Minister also raised concerns about data integrity, asserting that the current system’s legacy data is compromised.

He insisted on a rigorous “cleansing” process during the migration to a new platform to ensure fraudsters cannot simply carry their ill-gotten registrations forward.

On the technical front, Mr Nartey George outlined a future-proofed system.

He confirmed that the exercise will accelerate eSIM adoption and utilise biometric “liveliness tests” verified against the NIA database to prevent identity spoofing.
