St. Martins Catholic Hospital reports 66 preterm cases with three deaths

St. Martins Catholic Hospital at Manso Agroyesum in the Amansie South District has joined the global observance of World Prematurity Awareness Month, using the occasion to advocate for improved neonatal care and equal access to life-saving support for all preterm babies.

This year’s commemoration was held under the theme: “Equitable Care for Every Preterm Baby.”

The event brought together healthcare professionals, community members, mothers of preterm babies, and caregivers to intensify public education on prematurity, a leading cause of newborn deaths worldwide.

Hospital staff used the platform to educate families on early antenatal care, maternal nutrition, and early detection of pregnancy-related complications that contribute to preterm births.

Rev. Sister Mary Assumtal Taabuzuing, Senior Nurse Manager of the Hospital, addressing participants, revealed that the facility recorded 66 preterm cases this year, with three deaths, noting that the numbers showed a significant improvement compared to previous years.

According to her, the reduction in preterm mortality is the result of deliberate measures implemented by the hospital, including the availability of incubators and specialized neonatal care.

She added that the hospital had dedicated specialists who conduct regular reviews to closely monitor the health conditions and development of preterm babies.

Rev. Sister Mary Assumptal further emphasized the hospital’s commitment to continuous education for mothers of premature babies, ensuring they are well-informed and confident in caring for their infants both at the hospital and at home.

Mr. Kwaku Abone, the Chairman of the occasion, commended the nurses and management of St. Martins Catholic Hospital for their tireless efforts and dedication to saving the lives of preterm babies.

He appealed to individuals, philanthropists, corporate bodies, and benevolent organizations to support the hospital with additional incubators and essential neonatal equipment to strengthen the fight against preterm mortality.

Some mothers of preterm babies who benefited from the hospital’s care and education also shared emotional testimonies, expressing profound gratitude to the nurses, specialists, and management of the facility for their consistent support, compassion, and professionalism.
