The St Peter Methodist Church Choir at Mile 7, Accra, has climaxed its 25th anniversary celebration with a joyous thanksgiving service that brought together members, patrons and well-wishers in a spirit of gratitude and praise.
The usual spirit-filled service was elevated with special renditions of anthems and hymns, offered in thanksgiving to God for His blessings on their music ministry over the past quarter century.
The week-long celebration was held on the theme, “Choristers as Vessels of God: Celebrating 25 Years of God’s Goodness” (Colossians 3:16).
Activities leading up to the thanksgiving service included “Unveiling the Hymnal: Stories and Melodies,” held on Tuesday, during which selected hymns were performed and their historical and spiritual contexts explained to deepen the congregation’s appreciation.
A symposium followed on Wednesday on the topic “The Role of Choristers and Church Leadership in Church Growth,” addressed by Rev. Adomako Bempah Dweteh, Choir Chaplain of the New Achimota Circuit, and Mr. Robert Paul Laryea, Immediate Past Connexional Chairman of the Association of Methodist Church Choirs Ghana (GHAMECC).
In a goodwill message captured in the anniversary brochure, Very Rev. Daniel Kodwo Sekyi, Minister in charge of the church, commended the choir for its devotion, discipline and contribution to choral evangelism over the past 25 years. He expressed hope that the group would continue to grow in strength and grace and excel in its service to God and the church.
During the service, founding members, dedicated choristers and patrons were honoured with citations, medals and plaques for their contributions to the choir’s growth over the years.
Among those honoured were founding and inaugural members still active in the choir: Isaac Amo Eduful, Judith Adjoa Gaisie Forson and Noah Hagan. Other members recognised for dedicated service included Salome Donkor, Jennifer Baidoo, Juliana Mills, Diana Acquah, Mr Dadzie and Evelyn Akuoko.
Special awards were presented to Mrs Elizabeth Boamah for mobilising singers and hosting the choir’s first rehearsals in her home; Madam Regina Odoom, a founding member and Choir Mother; and Mr and Mrs John and Amy Dzandu, patrons of the choir, for their consistent financial support. Additionally, 15 other patrons were recognised for their continued assistance to the choir’s ministry.
The thanksgiving service brought together officials and members of the Association of Methodist Church Choirs Northern Accra Diocese and the New Achimota Circuit. An anniversary cake was cut, and a fundraising event held in support of the church organ project, which aims to enhance the choir’s musical capabilities and enrich worship at St Peter Methodist Society.
The journey of the St Peter Methodist Church Choir dates back to 14 December 1997, when it began as a youth-led musical ministry under the guidance of Elizabeth Boamah and Kwadwo Boamah, with 12 founding members.
From rehearsals held in private homes, the group, which initially functioned as a joint singing band and choir, evolved into a dedicated choir on 19 September 1999 with 16 members, equally split between men and women.
Officially inaugurated on 24 September 2000, the choir has since grown in strength and influence, with 20 active members and 19 patrons under the leadership of Edwin Amoah-Mensah.
