Strengthen financial inclusion support for smallholder farmers – Kpando MP

Mr Sebastian Deh, Member of Parliament for Kpando, has called for stronger financial inclusion to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

The appeal was made when the MP delivered a statement on the floor of Parliament on March 12, 2026, highlighting the crucial role smallholder farmers play in Ghana’s agricultural sector and national food security.

Mr Deh noted that smallholder farmers formed the backbone of the country’s agricultural production, contributing significantly to food supply, employment, and economic growth.

However, he observed that many farmers continued to face numerous challenges, including limited access to affordable credit, weak market linkages, and the growing impact of climate change on agricultural productivity.

The Kpando MP said improving financial inclusion through targeted interventions and innovative support systems would help farmers expand production and increase their income.

Mr Deh commended Opportunity International Savings and Loans for supporting rural farmers with tailored financial services, including seasonal loans, financial literacy training, and mobile banking services.

He stressed that sustained support for smallholder farmers was critical to strengthening rural economies, reducing poverty, and ensuring a food-secure Ghana.
