Authorities of the Nkwanta South Senior High School are appealing to parents to allow their children to return to school after the Christmas holidays.
The appeal is being made after nearly all students refused to show up at the school on the January 5th reopening date, issued by the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Speaking in an interview, the assistant headmaster of the schhol, Mr Joseph Mahama Iddrisu said, “As you can see, teachers are here but most students have still not reported”
The Ghana Education Service (GES) on January 3rd announced the reopening date for all senior high school students, especially students in their final year of study.
In the statement, the GES noted, “Form 1 and Green Track, as well as Form 1 Gold Track students, will also re-open on January 5 to complete their first semester.”
However, students of the Nkwanta SHS, have refused to heed to this directive and have decided not to report to school.
According to the Assistant Headmaster, he believes the absenteeism of the students could be as a result of miscommunication.
He said the absenteeism could be attributed to “students assuming school resumes as it did last year.”
Mr Iddrisu said, “Last year, school resumed on 1st March, so I’m sure they think it’s the same this year.”
“Before school closed, we [management of the school] informed students of the reopening date, 5th January, because we already had received the academic calendar,” he concluded.
He says though the few students who have reported to school are being attended to, the absence of a majority of students will retard academic work.
