Sudan’s head coach, James Kwesi Appiah, has set his sights on clinching the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Morocco. The Ghanaian strategist has demonstrated remarkable leadership, guiding Sudan to qualification under exceptionally challenging circumstances.
Despite the ongoing civil war forcing the team to play all their home games away from Sudan, Appiah’s tactical prowess and the players’ resilience ensured Sudan secured their spot in the tournament. Their qualification campaign was marked by fierce competition, notably overcoming Ghana by earning four crucial points in the qualifiers.
“Winning the trophy is my goal,” Appiah stated in an interview with Akoma FM. “By God’s grace, we have qualified. We will prepare thoroughly to ensure we have a strong team before the AFCON. Once you’re in, you aim for the cup rather than coming out with nothing.”
The 2025 AFCON is set to commence on December 21, with the official draw scheduled for January 25 in Rabat, Morocco.
Appiah emphasized the unpredictable nature of football, drawing attention to Ivory Coast’s unexpected triumph in the 2023 AFCON as evidence that no team should be underestimated. “Nothing is impossible in football. No team should be underestimated,” he remarked.
Under Appiah’s guidance, Sudan has not only defied the odds but also inspired hope among its supporters. The coach’s commitment to building a robust and competitive squad is evident, as he prepares the team to face some of Africa’s strongest footballing nations.
As Sudan gears up for the tournament, Appiah remains focused on fostering unity and maximizing the team’s potential. His strategic vision and unwavering determination position Sudan as a formidable contender in the upcoming AFCON, with aspirations of lifting the prestigious trophy and bringing glory to the nation.
