Suspected robber shot dead after attempting to hijack a taxi

A man suspected of hijacking a taxi at gunpoint in the La suburb of Accra on Saturday was found dead with a gunshot wound, police have confirmed.

The incident occurred near the La Girls’ School area when the suspect, identified by residents only as ‘Mugu’, allegedly attacked a taxi driver and drove off with a Daewoo Matiz taxi with registration number GS 8598-17.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect fired a gunshot before seizing the vehicle, causing panic among passers-by and nearby residents.

Many kept their distance for fear of being harmed.

The stolen taxi later crashed near the same area under unclear circumstances.

Residents discovered that the suspect was with a gunshot wound shortly after the crash.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It remains unknown whether the gunshot was self-inflicted, the result of an exchange of fire, or occurred during the crash.

Police officers who arrived at the scene transported the body to the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances leading to the suspect’s death.

The condition of the taxi driver has not yet been disclosed, though residents said he received medical attention following the attack.

The incident has heightened concerns over rising armed robberies targeting commercial vehicles in the capital.
