Tema Port denies strike allegations

By News1

The Management of the Port of Tema has issued a strong rebuttal against claims of strike action and labour unrest, stating that operations at the nation’s premier port are running smoothly and without disruption.

The rebuttal comes in response to recent statements by the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG), which had expressed concerns that labour issues could lead to operational delays and potential cargo diversion to neighbouring countries.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, port authorities labelled FABAG’s claims as “inaccurate” and not reflective of the current situation on the ground.

Management clarified that a minor disagreement occurred approximately one month ago with a section of dockworkers.

The issue centered on the implementation of a new 24-hour shift system, a key component of the port’s alignment with the national 24-Hour Economy policy.

The new shift pattern is designed to boost efficiency, generate more employment, and enhance service delivery by operating three eight-hour shifts per day.

Under the system, one job is shared rotationally among three workers over a 24-hour period, offering improved pay, guaranteed weekly rest days, and better work-life balance.

According to the statement, the temporary disagreement arose when some workers attempted to work all three shifts themselves, contrary to the rotational model. Port Management emphasized that this incident did not constitute a strike and at no point were port activities halted.

“Through engagement and dialogue, the issue was resolved amicably within a short period, and normal operations have continued without interruption,” the release confirmed.

The Port of Tema has cautioned against public commentary that could needlessly alarm investors, port users, and the business community, urging stakeholders to verify information through official channels before making public pronouncements.

Reaffirming its commitment to operational excellence, Management stated that the port remains fully dedicated to providing reliable, world-class services while supporting national development initiatives.

“The Port of Tema remains open, fully operational, and ready to serve Ghana’s trade and industrial needs,” the statement concluded.
