TUTAG voices strong concern over environmental, public health threats from illegal mining

The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has reiterated its grave concern about the devastating effects of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, on Ghana’s environment, water bodies, farmlands, and citizens’ health.

At its recent National Congress, the Association, in a communique, noted that the continued pollution of major rivers, widespread deforestation, and land degradation were creating serious public health, ecological, and economic threats that could have long-term consequences for present and future generations.

While acknowledging the ongoing interventions by the Government of Ghana and relevant state agencies to combat illegal mining, TUTAG stressed that such efforts must be sustained, intensified, and shielded from political influence.

The Association emphasised that protecting the environment was a national responsibility that transcended partisan interests and required consistent enforcement of laws and regulations.

As a key stakeholder in national development, TUTAG reaffirmed its commitment to supporting lawful, sustainable, and community-based initiatives aimed at eradicating illegal mining activities.

The Association highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies, civil society, educational institutions, and local communities to promote environmental stewardship and ensure the long-term health of Ghana’s natural resources.

Congress also stressed that TUTAG would continue to monitor developments closely and, where necessary, take appropriate and lawful actions to defend Ghana’s environment, water resources, and public health.

The Association urged all citizens and stakeholders to recognise that environmental protection was not optional but essential for sustainable national development.

TUTAG called on the government to strengthen regulatory frameworks, enhance community awareness, and provide adequate resources for law enforcement agencies to combat illegal mining effectively.

The Congress affirmed that safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources is critical for ensuring food security, economic stability, and the overall well-being of current and future generations.
