The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA), in collaboration with the municipal office of the Social Welfare Department, has disbursed its first 2025 disability fund to 10 persons with disability.
A total of GHs53,180 was disbursed in cash and business items, including deep freezers, to the beneficiaries.
The disbursement is the 11th in a series since the TWMA was ceded off from the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA).
The 10 beneficiaries comprised eight children and two adults drawn from Boteyman, Lashibi, Spintex, Adjei Kojo, Baatsonaa, Kanewu and Solomon City.
Mr Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, presenting the items and cash, said the assembly received 487 applications, out of which 242 persons had been served through various support over the years.
Mr Totimeh said the disbursement represented significant improvement towards inclusive development, revealing that cumulatively, the assembly had disbursed GHs611,192 from 2018 to 2025.
He explained that the disability fund formed three per cent of the district assembly’s common fund, adding that the disbursements was a clear demonstration of the assembly’s unwavering dedication to the social and economic empowerment of people with special needs.
He added that it formed part of the resetting agenda of the government to ensure persons with special abilities were empowered to be self-independent, announcing that the three per cent had been increased to five per cent.
The MCE encouraged beneficiaries to put the disbursement to good use, cautioning that misusing it without proper results and accountability would hinder their chances of getting more support and also prevent others from getting access to such support. Mr Charles Nartei, the Chairman for the Tema West persons with special abilities, indicated that many persons with disabilities within the municipality had benefitted in many ways, adding that applicants went through vetting before beneficiaries are chosen.
