Two dead, 19 others injured as three vehicles crashed on N1 highway

A multi-vehicle collision on the N1 highway has claimed two lives and left 19 others injured, according to an official update from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The incident occurred on Monday, February 23, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.

In a statement released on Tuesday, February 24, the GNFS detailed that rescue teams from its National Headquarters were deployed following a distress call received at exactly 7:58 p.m. GMT.

The crash involved a Kia motor truck (GG 1304-18), a Sprinter bus (GX 8325-13), and a Volvo trailer (GT 7856-20).

Upon arrival, first responders were met with a chaotic scene, requiring them to extricate victims trapped in the wreckage before administering on-site medical aid.

Of the 21 individuals involved in the pileup, two were pronounced dead at the scene.

The surviving 19 victims were rushed to Achimota Hospital and the 37 Military Hospital for urgent medical attention.

“The service, working alongside other emergency responders, secured and managed the scene, prevented secondary incidents, and cleared the roadway to restore traffic flow,” the GNFS statement confirmed.

Authorities have stated that the cause of the fatal crash is currently under investigation.

Extending its condolences to the bereaved families, the GNFS also wished the injured a speedy recovery. In the wake of the incident, the service has issued a renewed plea to the public, urging all motorists to strictly observe traffic regulations and prioritize road safety.
