Two dead, four injured in head-on collision on Elubo-Takoradi highway

A head-on collision between a tipper truck and a Nigerian passenger bus at Abease has claimed two lives and left four others injured.

The crash occurred on the busy Elubo-Takoradi Highway when a Sinotruck (Howo) with registration number GS 3789-24 collided with a Lagos-bound passenger bus bearing Nigerian license plate AAA 449 YN.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), a distress call was received at exactly 11:53 a.m. , prompting an immediate response from the Elubo Fire Station.

A five-member rescue team arrived at the scene within six minutes to find six people trapped, five in the bus and one in the truck.

By the time firefighters arrived, bystanders had already managed to pull three victims from the wreckage.

The rescue team worked swiftly to extricate the remaining casualties. Four injured persons were stabilised and rushed to the Elubo Government Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Tragically, the driver of the passenger bus was pronounced dead at the scene. The mate of the tipper truck later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Their bodies have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for preservation and identification.

Preliminary investigations by the GNFS suggest that the bus driver lost control after allegedly swerving to avoid a pothole, veering directly into the path of the oncoming tipper truck.

Beyond the rescue effort, firefighters took additional safety measures, disconnecting the vehicles’ battery terminals to prevent sparks, cooling the truck’s overheated engine compartment, and clearing scattered debris from the highway to restore traffic flow.

The Western Regional Police Command has launched a full investigation into the incident, while authorities are urging motorists to exercise extra caution on that stretch of road, particularly during the rainy season when potholes become more hazardous.
