Two persons have been confirmed dead following a road traffic collision on the Accra-Kumasi Highway at Asuboi on Saturday, 18th July 2026.
Firefighters from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station successfully rescued a trapped mate from the wreckage during the operation.
The accident occurred at approximately 09:01 hours and involved a Hyundai Truck (registration number GX 7359-14) and a KIA Rhino (registration number GX 857-16).
A distress call was received at the station, prompting the immediate dispatch of a six-member crew led by Station Officer (StnOI) Antwi Forson. The team departed at 09:03 hours and arrived at the scene by 09:13 hours.
Upon arrival, responders found multiple casualties trapped inside the severely damaged vehicles.
The crew deployed hydraulic extrication equipment and conducted a swift rescue operation, freeing the victims.
The rescued individuals were handed over to the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Ambulance Service for transportation to the Suhum Government Hospital.
The accident involved four (4) persons in total. Tragically, two (2) of the casualties were pronounced dead at the scene.
Both vehicles sustained extensive damage, with the Hyundai truck’s front end and the KIA Rhino’s frontal section and one tyre destroyed.
Preliminary investigations by the Suhum Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) indicate that the KIA Rhino, which was travelling from the Upper West Region towards Accra, suffered a sudden front tyre burst.
The driver lost control and collided with the Hyundai truck ahead.
Other state agencies on the scene included the Ghana Police Service (Suhum MTTD) and the Ghana Ambulance Service (Ayensuano District). The fire crew concluded operations at 10:07 hours and returned to base at 10:15 hours.
In a separate incident on the same day, firefighters from the Techiman Fire Station of the GNFS also successfully extricated a mate trapped in a collision involving a Kia Rhino truck and a DAF XF long truck near the Techiman Omanhene’s Palace. That operation was concluded without fatalities.
The GNFS extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and strongly advises all motorists, particularly those embarking on long-distance travel, to conduct thorough pre-trip vehicle inspections, with special emphasis on tyre integrity and pressure, to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
