Two men have been sentenced to 20 years in prison each by a Tema circuit court for human trafficking and causing harm.
Kingsley Ndifon, 29, and Emmanuel Akong, 25, were found guilty on charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, human trafficking, and causing harm.
The sentences, handed down by Circuit Court B in Tema, are to run concurrently. They received 20 years each on the trafficking charge and 10 years each for causing harm.
The two were arrested in August 2023 at Sebrepor, a suburb of Tema, following a distress call that led police to a house where 11 Nigerian nationals were being held against their will.
The victims, all believed to have been lured from Nigeria with false promises of employment, were instead forced into cyber-related criminal activities and confined to the property.
According to police investigations, the traffickers recruited the victims under the guise of securing legitimate jobs in Ghana.
Upon arrival, however, the victims were coerced into online fraud and other illegal cyber operations, and their movement was severely restricted.
Authorities have described the ruling as a significant victory in the fight against human trafficking, which has increasingly taken on a digital dimension in the region.
The case also underscores the need for stronger cross-border cooperation and public awareness to prevent such exploitation.
The convicted men are currently serving their sentences at a local correctional facility.
