The first case of Coronavirus (COVID-19) has been recorded in Wa in the Upper West Region of Ghana.

It is unclear if the case forms part of the 136 cases recorded in the country as at March 27.

The Regional Minister, Hafiz Bin Salih confirmed the first case in Wa in his address to the media on Friday, March 27, 2020.

He said the patient is a 42-year-old Ghanaian who visited UK, Spain and returned to Ghana through Egypt.

Hafiz Bin Salih revealed the patient travelled from Accra to Wa via public transport before he started showing symptoms.

The patient was tested around 1pm on Thursday and the region received the report of the result around Friday noon.

“…[He] returned to Ghana eight days ago through Egypt and travelled from Accra to Wa through public transport and has been confirmed COVID-19 positive. This is the first case of a suspect [in the Upper West Region] whose samples were taken for test and the result is that the patient is a COVID-19 patient,” the Minister said.

He added that the patient self-quarantined himself prior to confirmation of his COVID-19 status.

The Minister also urged residents to remain calm as government takes measures to protect Ghanaians.
