The Ghana Music Awards known popularly as the VGMA now, was launched in 1999 by Charterhouse Productions.
The awards event has seen legends and young artists go home with topmost prizes each year.
Akyeame, made up of Quophi Okyeame and Okyeame Kwame, emerged as the best act at the first edition in 1999.
So far, only Sarkodie and VIP (VVIP) have won the ‘Artiste of the Year’ more than once.
Both acts have had the opportunity to take home the ultimate prize twice each.
In 2019, no act was crowned ‘Artiste of the Year’ due to a brawl that ensued between Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy at the event.
