Volta NPP cautions Akatsi South MCE against interference in party affairs

The Volta Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has asked its executives in Akatsi South not to attend a meeting convened by the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC).

The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, was called by Mr Daniel Dagba the Municipal Chief Executive, following recent security incidents alleged to have been linked to the Party’s ongoing membership registration exercise in the area.

In a letter to the party and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), MUSEC cited disturbances including attacks at a residence at Asafotsi and at the Lord’s Pentecostal Church International, which it said had been linked to some supporters of the NPP.

The letter, signed by Mr Dagba, who is also the Chairman of MUSEC in the area invited constituency executives to a meeting at the Assembly Hall, where they were asked to come along with branch registers to assist the Ghana Police Service in ongoing investigations, adding “attendance is compulsory.”

Mr Pope Yao Yevoo, Regional Secretary of the NPP in a statement, said it could not accept what it described as ‘interference in its internal affairs.’

The statement said, while the party recognised the role of MUSEC in maintaining peace and security, it believed the request for internal party documents went beyond its mandate.

According to the Secretariat, the party has its own structures for handling disputes and issues arising from its activities, including the ongoing membership registration exercise.

It said steps were already being taken internally to address the situation.

The statement, however, acknowledged the role of the police in investigating matters that could affect public order, but maintained that internal party records should not be subjected to external processes.

The Regional Secretariat therefore asked all party officers in Akatsi South to disregard the invitation.

It also urged the MCE to concentrate on his responsibilities and allow the party’s internal mechanisms to operate without interference.
