As the world marks International Volunteer Day (IVD), Lions International District 418 has urged the public to support community volunteer initiatives to help transform lives.
In a statement to commemorate the day, the organisation reiterated its commitment to addressing pressing social needs and thanked members who continued to play significant roles in various sectors.
The group emphasised the importance of volunteerism and encouraged individuals to join Lion Clubs in their localities.
“Volunteering with Lions is more than an act of generosity. It is a life-changing experience,” it said.
“It provides individuals with an opportunity to develop leadership skills, build meaningful relationships, and become part of a global family of change-makers.”
“Lions International, District 418, Ghana, joins millions across the globe to honour volunteers whose selfless dedication continues to transform lives and strengthen communities.”
The group has, over the years, been recognised as the world’s largest and most active volunteer service organisation.
Since its inception in 1917, Lions International continue to address social challenges and create sustainable impact.
The club in Ghana has been at the forefront of service delivery through nine global causes, including diabetes awareness and support, vision and eye health, childhood cancer relief, and hunger alleviation.
The rest are environmental sustainability, youth development, mental health, humanitarian support, and disaster relief.
Across the country, Lions have embarked on medical outreach, climate-smart initiatives, food assistance programmes, community education, blood donation drives, school health screenings, and emotional support to vulnerable groups.
“Lions understand that true service is not measured by resources, but by the heart willing to respond to need,” the statement.
“Whether through a warm meal for the hungry, care for a child battling cancer, restoring sight, planting trees, or supporting communities on the frontlines of climate change, Lions embody the spirit of global unity and hope.”
“Volunteering is not just what we do; it is who we are. On this special day, we honuor every Lion who has given their time, talents, and treasure to serve humanity.”

International Volunteer Day is celebrated on December 5, every year, to acknowledge and promote the spirit of volunteerism at the local, national and international levels.
This year’s editon, on the theme: “Every Contribution Matters,” marks the official global launch of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026).
The event invites Member States to pledge measures to embed volunteerism in development strategies and lead national campaigns.
