Former Ghana Premier League champions Wa All Stars has been renamed Legon Cities Football Club by new owners.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) approved the name change on Saturday evening, barely 24 hours to the start of the 2019/20 season.
“We acknowledge receipt of a letter from Wa All-Star Football Club dated 23rd December 2019 requesting for approval for a change of your club’s name from Wa All Stars Football Club to Legon Cities Football Club,” the GFA said in a letter addressed to the renamed club.
“The Ghana Football Association(GFA) also acknowledges receipt of the documents on the change of name to Legon Cities Football Club (an incorporated company) from the Registrar General’s Department attached to your request submitted to the GFA under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992).
“Consequently, the GFA hereby approves the change of name from Wa All Stars Football Club…”.
The name change of the 2016 Ghanaian Premier League forms part of re-branding by the new owner of the club businessman Richard King Attipoe.

Mr Attipoe recently became the majority shareholder of the club which was once owned by former GFA President, Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi who is serving a lifetime ban by FIFA from all football-related activities.
Legon Cities FC first game of the season is against Dansoman-based Liberty Professionals on Sunday.
