Rapper E.L has taken a swipe at musicians who are claiming to be the originators of the popular music genre, Azonto.
It comes after musician Gasmila, who prides himself as the pioneer of the genre, earlier reacted to a motion by rapper Sarkodie seeking to bring back the Ghanaian music trend which appears to be fizzling out.
‘Azonto’ was very popular in the country from 2010-2015 but had been taken over by Afrobeats, which is credited to Nigerians.
Speaking on the matter, E.L said music genres are created from the arts culture and since there is no owner of rap, highlife, afrobeat and other genres, nobody can lay claim to Azonto.
“Why does someone want to own Azonto? Why should we have a landlord for something that was created for Ghanaians,” he wondered during an interview with Caleb Nii Boye on Live FM’s showbiz program.
“I don’t think anybody can sit somewhere and stage a claim to a music genre. Nobody created Hip Pop, Afrobeats, Highlife and the same applies to Azonto because it comes from culture,” he added.
Keche Joshua blasts Gasmila over Azonto curator claims
Several other musicians side with E.L on this issue as Joshua, a member of the Keche music group has faced Gasmila head on asking him to stop being petty with his claim of being the originator of Azonto.
The music group who can’t be left out when it comes to the azonto movement has asked Gasmila to take his dance if that is what he is so passionate about, so they also take their music.
In a video sighted online, Keche Joshua was heard saying after all the ‘azonto’ none of them, not even Guru, received an award for it.
